Castle Merchants Board Game Picture For Castle Merchants Board Game from Z-Man Games Price: £22.99
    RRP: £26.99

Castle Merchants is a tile laying, hand management, pick up & deliver game. You play the role of a merchant peddling his wares to various castles in the land. Since all the merchants are offering the same wares for sale, the merchant who is able to reach a castle first can receive a higher price than those visiting in later turns.

You must manage your hand of path cards that you use to place paths onto the board, or to traverse the paths themselves. You may play any number of cards on your turn, but must be careful as you can only replenish your hand with a certain amount of cards regardless of how many you played. Whether you want to reduce your hand size to push on farther and beat your competition to a castle is just one of the decisions you'll find yourself making every turn.

Merchants must build paths wisely for if you can't fully make use of the tiles you play there is a chance a competing merchant might be able to speed past you on the path and make his delivery to the castle first. Merchants must also be wary of possible rock slides that can make a path impassable and force them to have to change their plans and find a way around the obstruction. The first merchant to accumulate 18 pieces of gold is declared the winner.

Or he might invest in building an oil imperium. But wait- what's that young fellow over there up to? Buying all the shipping lines? That might change the outlook? considerably in fact? let's see?

Indonesia is a game in which 2-5 players build up an economy. • Roads and Boats 3rd Edition Board Game Picture For Roads and Boats 3rd Edition Board Game from Splotter Price: £55.99
    RRP: £59.99

In Roads & Boats, each player builds a civilization over a long period of time, like in many other games. Unlike most games, however, the emphasis is not on warfare, population growth, city or statebuilding, but on logistics, or rather: on transport.

Each player starts the game with three donkeys, a pile of wooden boards, a number of stones and two geese. With these few resources, you try to build such diverse things as woodcutters, roads, boats, mines, a stock exchange... but beware! There is no concept of territory in this game: you cannot own land, nor buildings, so the things you build can be used by any other player...

The basic game contains a rule and scenario book in English and Germand, a pile of hexagonal terrain tiles, 120 means of transportation from donkeys to steamers (wooden pieces), 75 walls (little woorden rods), 4 research boards, 28 discovery stones (glass), a wonder of the world with 193 wonder stones (cardboard), 18 mines + bags, 115 factories (cardboard), 600 goods (cardboard) and several other parts.

A donkey plods onward, carrying some building material. Three geese are following some steps behind. All is well, when suddenly the sky darkens and a loud roar drowns out all other sound. The donkey frightens and looks up; someone in a three-piece suit is jumping out of an aeroplane. A minute later, he has landed and immediately starts giving orders: "Fold up this parachute! We've got work to do around here! This place will flood any minute now." A train stops and unloads some statues. "Bwah. Art!" growls the manager. We've got more serious things to worry about. Ask the traders if they have been able to procure any iron, we need to connect our oil platform to the power grid. And by the way, has that old paper mill in the city been blown up yet?" The donkey plods onwards. It has to build a road first....

Santiago Board Game Picture For Santiago Board Game from Z-Man Games Price: £18.49
    RRP: £19.99

Some kilometers west of the African mainland lies the Cape Verde Island of Santiago. The climate is hot, and every drop of water is precious. Every player buys at auction certain plantations (potatoes, beans, paprika, bananas, and sugar cane) and tries to connect these to others in order to unite and enlarge their holdings. Plantations must quickly be connected to the canal irrigation system so that they do not dry up completely and fail to produce any yield. Bribes to the Canal Overseer are necessary, in order to insure that the canal system connects to your own plantations. The sooner that a plantation is irrigated and is connected to other plantations of the same type, the more yield – and thus the more money – will be gained at the end of the game. The one who wins will be the one who most skillfully acquires plantations, irrigates them, and connects them to lucrative plantations of the same type.

Tinners Trail Board Game Picture For Tinners Trail Board Game from Warfrog Price: £20.99
    RRP: £24.99

The first release in the Treefrog Line. Tinners' Trail is set in nineteenth century Cornwall. You play the part of a mining venturer attempting to make the most money from mining tin and copper.

The map starts with tin, copper, and water cubes placed on it. Special dice are used to determine how many of each start in each area. You have ten time points to spend on actions. The most important action is building a mine. However, you can only suggest an area for a mine to be built in. The player who bids the most in an auction gains the right to build there. The cost to mine ore depends on the amount of water in the area. You can remove water by building ports, improving steam pumps, and building trains. You can also build underground drainage tunnels, called adits. When you build an adit you will also discover new lodes of tin and copper. Additional miners can be employed to improve the capacity of your mine, (how much ore you can take out in a single action). If you are short of money you can also sell pasties.

The price for tin and copper is set randomly at the beginning of each turn. It can vary a lot and you really want to sell when the prices are high. However, you cannot hold ore back, you must sell everything you mine.

Once you have sold your ore you decide how much money you wish to invest outside of Cornwall. This is how you convert money to victory points. The earlier you invest the better the return.

VOC - Founding the Dutch East Indies Company Board Game Picture For VOC - Founding the Dutch East Indies Company Board Game from Splotter Price: £12.99
    RRP: £14.99

It's 1602... Merchants from the rich provinces of Holland and neighboring Zealand gather in stately rooms to discuss the foundation of a mighty consortium: a company that will hold the monopoly of the very profitable East Indies trade. One question occupies their minds more than anything: who will control the new company?

Each player takes the role of a merchant living at the end of the sixteenth century. These merchants sent out ships to explore and expand the profitable trade in the east, where they traded cloves, nutmeg, silk and tea in such remote areas as India, Indonesia, China and Japan. These goods were then sold at great profit in the West. The journey, however, was a dangerous one and fitting out a ship was prohibitively expensive. Merchants therefore cooperated in small groups, called 'compagnie' in Dutch, to fit out ships together.

At the same time, competition was cut-throat, not only at home, where Amsterdam was the most fearsome rival, but also abroad. Your task in this game is be to make as large a profit as you can - but at the same time uphold the honor of your home town against the mighty merchants from Amsterdam.

This box contains two game versions: the basic game, which can be played by 4 or 5 players, and the advanced game, for 3 to 5 players. The basic game is suited for people aged 10 onwards and takes about an hour. The advanced game is intended for people aged 14 and older, and takes between 90-120 minutes, depending on how long you spend negotiating.

The game contains wooden cubes, representing seemen and merchants; a board; four erasable maps of the far East, on which the players can draw their course; cardboard counters for the various types of goods; contract cards which indicate the value and the demand for the various types of goods; game rules in English and German; and several other parts.
