In Aapep you play either demon Aapep, trying to swallow the sun, or the god Ra, fighting to escape the underworld.

Players try to place Pyramid Tiles so that from any one edge of the board, there are either four light Tile sides visible (Ra escapes and wins) or four dark Tile sides visible (Aapep swallows the sun and wins).

There are 5 factions in Crown of the Emperor: TCG, they are: The Baker Alliance, Democratic Union, Truman-Winthrop, The Choy Corporation, Layton Industries.

Each has their own specialty which sets them apart from the others. Which faction you choose depends on your desired strategy. Remember that the goal is to become the next Emperor, and you do that by raising your own prestige to 40 points, starting at 10.

The Baker Alliance is known for colonizing planets. They receive a +1 Prestige point for every uncontested colony per turn. An uncontested colony is a colony that has no enemy forces on it, and no other player has that same card in play.

Keeping a colony uncontested can be very tricky. Players must pack their deck with lots of different planets as well as Military cards to fight off any other claims.

The Choy corporation is the economic powerhouse of the game. Everything thing that do is related to increasing their income per turn. As such, the receive a prestige bonus for every 5 income they producer per turn.

The Democratic Union has politics as it's focus. This makes them very tough to beat as Crown of the Emperor is a politics game. A DU player receives a bonus for any political action taken, the drawback is that they also lose that bonus for any political action defeated. A DU will succeed by keeping his opponent off balance and unable to achieve his factions goals.

Layton Industries, in the timeline for the TCG, produce the Hyper-drives for all of the space ships in the game. This makes their manufacturing the most important aspect to playing them. The LI player must build industries as fast as possible. They receive a bonus for the active Industry cards in place, per turn.

Truman-Winthrop is the military arm of the empire. They support the Emperor and have a large influence in who will be the next Emperor. Their bonus is based on the number of battles fought. Their officers and advisors are highly sought after so, any battle fought brings them added prestige.

The TW player must work doubly hard at production since their focus is preventing others from any production.

Cutthroat Caverns is truly unique. While most definitely a highly interactive card game and very easy to play, it requires the strategic thinking of a board game. And, for some uncanny reason, the game will make you FEEL like you are in the middle of a classic dungeon crawl, even though table talk is about as much roleplaying as you are likely to do. That all said, it has proven to have a very broad appeal with gamers across several genres.

The real joy is the delicate balance between helping the party (and staying alive) vs working towards your own selfish goals (and risking the welfare of everyone). There are no dice. Each Turn, you will choose how much damage you are willing to do to the monster- or won't do - as you jockey for position to land the killing blow. And when characters can make that kind of decision, things get very funny & very deadly - very quickly.

With 25 encounters, all requiring a different group strategy and seperate individual strategy, game play is always challenging. Only 9 random encounters will be used in any game, so the experience is always different. Plus, the first expansion is already complete with 15 new, tougher encounters and a whole new 'character enhancing' game mechanic to keep people coming back.

Deeper & Darker is the first expansion to Cutthroat Caverns and further extends replay value with 15 new Encounters. Like in the core set, these Encounters all have a very different feel and require new strategies to overcome - both as a group and as an individual. As is implied by the title, these new critters are more challenging than ever and will put your party to the test. You may find yourself playing backwards in time against PARADOX, be tempted one too many times by ASHTONGUE THE CRUEL, or find that seven heads are not better than one with the HYDRA.

Plus, we've anticipated the desire to make the characters in the game more dimensional. So we've built a whole new 'character enhancing' game mechanic, one-use special abilities that are unique to each character and suited to their race or class specialties. With special abilities like Blackclaw's Fury, Ranged Salvo and Fleece you may find the tools you need to give you the edge.
