World War 1

1914: Twilight in the East Board Game Picture For 1914: Twilight in the East Board Game from GMT Games Price: £54.99
RRP: £64.99

1914, Twilight in the East models the battles that took place in Prussia, Poland and Galicia during the first year of World War One. Beginning with the Russian invasions of Prussia and Galicia in August and ending after the Battle of Lodz in December, it recreates the ebb and flow of the huge forces sent marching across the Eastern Front in 1914.

Designed by Michael Resch, and developed by Dick Vohlers, the game has been comprehensively researched using a great array of resources, including the military archives in Vienna, Austria. The game's Order of Battle has been thoroughly researched and is by far the best used by any game on the subject. Based on his experience with other WWI game systems, Mike has written streamlined rules so that not only is it playable, but it's focused on those aspects of warfare that made the opening stages of WWI so unique. The game is exciting and gives wonderful insights into one of the most important campaigns of the twentieth century.

  • Rule Booklet

FREIKORPS is a simulation game depicting a hypothetical invasion of Germany by the Soviet Union’s “Red Army of Workers and Peasants” in 1920. The game is designed for two players, one representing the irresistible forces of proletarian revolution (the Red player), and the other the impervious alliance of anti-Bolshevist forces that would have been arrayed to oppose such an invasion (the White player).

The game begins just after the Red player’s forces have won the Battle for Warsaw in August 1920. Sensing that the time is ripe to “carry Revolution to the rest of Europe on the points of Red bayonets,” the leadership of the Soviet Union has decided to seize Berlin, capital of a Germany in political and economic disarray. However, it is already mid-summer and the Soviet Union cannot sustain a military effort of this size past the onset of bad weather at the end of October. The Red player has just ten weeks to change the course of world history.

They Shall Not Pass, The Battle of Verdun 1916 Picture For They Shall Not Pass, The Battle of Verdun 1916 from Avalanche Press Price: £13.49
    RRP: £14.99

In early 1916, the German and French armies faced each other in what appeared to be a stalemate. The German commander-in-chief, Erich von Falkenhayn, conceived one of the most cold-hearted plans in military history. Fall Gericht, which translates as “Place of Execution,” would bleed France white by a simple battle of attrition, without regard to the suffering of his own soldiers.

For ten months, the German Fifth Army hurled itself against the old fortress city, its commander kept in the dark about the offensive’s true goal. The French Second Army stood firm, commanded by Henri Petain, who issued the famous order, “They shall not pass.”

    Verdun’s defenders refused to break.
